Finishing up “A Tavern Show” ended up being a bit of a near thing. As expected the pass week with the move and starting to figure out the new job was not conducive to writing but I woke up early Saturday morning, went down to a little common area the hotel I’m at had away from the bustle, and finished up the story before editing it. The other good news of last week was that I have a place now under rent and just as soon as my possessions arrive I can go about moving out of of a hotel. Two people and two dogs in a hotel room is not especially comfortable, especially when one of those dogs has a tendency of snoring far louder than his size would suggest.
Otherwise, most of the past week that hasn’t been work has been spent home hunting and getting to know the area. So, I don’t have too much to talk about this week. Hawaii is of course tropical and wonderful and I think perhaps the most interesting thing has been what being in Hawaii and living in a hotel has done to my mentality. New surroundings, tropical visuals, eating out frequently, are both things that I would normally associate with a vacation. I’m not on vacation, this is my home location for the next few years and I’m working five days a week, but my mind keeps shifting as if I am on a trip. Which is all the more strange when I have to make sure I do things for work like sleep properly, iron clothes, and prep some kind of meal for lunch.
I suppose if nothing else it’s an interesting lesson on just how strongly the environment can affect an one’s headspace. From the practical side, it’s helped me stay more relaxed through the stress of a new job which is a win. The downside is that it has eaten a far bit into my savings (though the work travel claim should help there). How to exactly recreate the lower stress headspace without the costly downsides that is something I’ll have to think about.
While work and trying to find a home are situated, I’d say we’re not out of the “disrupted writing schedule” woods yet. However, the plan this week is do get a lore article up. Both to do some world building and because those are often easier to do, at least once I’ve done the outline. Won’t commit to more plans beyond that. Hope you’re all enjoying your summer and are getting a little vacation in, even if it’s in between the rest of the responsibilities of life.
Go forth and do good things,
Sean
