There's Power in Stories

Weekly Check-In – Making the People of Illithiust

I posted the first Lore Article talking about the various intelligent species of Illithiust.  Besides the Landians, the Aenesi are the oldest of my unique people and writing their lore article reminded me of the reasoning which led to me deciding to create a unique peoples and races for my setting

I like Elves, Dwarves, and the other hosts of common fantasy races.  In many ways the role of the ancient first race that Elves often fill, that is old and having been the rulers of civilizations greater than what can exist now, are replaced by Landians in Illithiust.  However, as I developed Illithiust I found that what I needed out of an ancient race would ultimately run counter to the common stereotypes of the Elves.  So, rather than have Elves but have to go into detail about how different they were I just made a need species.  This met the demands of Illithiust and once I had made one race it made sense to go ahead and commit to making them all.  The wandering and predatory Aenesi, with their unique trade-centric Empire became the next example.  The agrarian and straightforward approach of the Bovini will be another (and explored in a later Lore Article).

Ultimately, to me it has felt more freeing to develop my own peoples than it was to try and match established races, with their stereotypes and expectations, into my setting and stories.  That does raise the question of why continue to keep Humans around as Humai.  I feel that having Humans was important to help keep buy in with you the readers.  A story needs characters the reader can relate to and using Humans is a easy, but valuable shortcut, to achieving that end.

I’m working a several stories in the background right and so the plan this week is to post another Lore Article.  While I do plan to do similar articles for all the peoples of Illithiust, I’m gonna to instead focus on an article looking at some specific and noteworthy individuals in the current Cycle.

I have some more small modifications to the website I’d like to implement as well but we’ll see where the week takes me.  As always, if you have any comments, questions, or request feel free to comment below or send me an email at feywarrior@hotmail.com.

Go forth and do good things,

Sean
