There's Power in Stories

Weekly Check-In – Internet Cafes

It remains kinda hard to run a website without reliable internet. Should be resolving that this week (really wanted to go with a local company vice one of the big internet providers, especially since once hooked up the service was said to be better, but gotta get the service hooked up). I’m not doing well writing consistently with my life so out of whack, but that’s really a matter of adjustment on my end that I can take care of. After all, I do at least have a tablet with a keyboard and a lawn chair to sit in and those two are enough to write (and a spotty cell phone hot spot enough to post it here).

The story I dropped this past weekend was something I put together for a prompt on r/WritingPrompts which is a fun place to go to get some ideas when you’re wanting to write but not sure about what, and also to read some very interesting drop stories and unique styles. I’ve written a little science fiction over the years, even to the point of having a very rough outline for a setting to tell a story in. From my experience, science fiction and fantasy both share the need for well developed settings. However, I think science fiction has a greater need for internal consistency, mainly because that consistency details the technology of the setting and technology is the usual hallmark of science fiction. I’ve intended from the beginning for this site to have a science fiction side and I suppose posting “Immortality Setting” will be the start of that (though big site changes aren’t likely to happen until I have reliable internet and my PC back).

I will say that an interesting thing over the last couple of weeks has been my first experiences with internet cafes. I play games with some friends once a week, and also do an online Dungeon and Dragons session twice a month. These friends are some that I’ve known since I was in my single digits, and I didn’t want to miss spending time with. So on a whim, I searched for an internet café in my area. I really didn’t think I would find one, figuring they had largely gone the way of the dodo when cell phones and home internet become common. In reality, I figured I’d find a Starbucks and try and mooch off their wifi. I was pleasantly surprise when I found an internet café, one with computers more powerful than my home rig. It has been a fun experience, even if I am the oldest person at the café by 10-15 years. Plus they’ll bring you out a plate of pizza rolls and it’s hard to beat playing video games with friends while eating pizza rolls.

No real plan for this week. I’m tempted to write some random things set around Illithiust and give the Fey and Bard a break for a bit. We’ll see if that plays out but I’ll keep plugging along and hope you all take care.

Go forth and do good things,

Sean
