As I’ve grown older I’ve come to realized the power music has.

I’ve always loved music and song but I thought they were just the medium by which as story was told.  It was the story, I thought, that was the key.  The spinning a tale of adventurers clearing out a nest of Kercs was the keystone in stopping the dragonkin from returning.  The music was just the mean, it was how I went about telling that story.

Now though, after all these years I wonder if in fact the song is what made it work.  Quartes first told me of Kol Tailen, how the fortress floated in the sky because of a heart of illithimar its creators had crafted for it.  In the aftermath of our battles there, he took me as deep into the heart of the ruin as we could reach and there we found a remnant of the contraption the old Landians had made.  However, it was too ruined for me to understand even a little of its workings.

It was when we found Aus Ladon, and made our home on that floating island for a time, that I was able to wonder about these illithimar cores once more.  Quartes and I found it one day.  Water funneled from the island’s lake, a lake filled by a winter runoff, did indeed turn and drive some contraption neither of us dared to touch.  What I felt at the time, and swear I can still feel the reverberations of to this day, was the low thrum of some song.  I have wondered if perhaps that contraption sang to the illithimar and so the actual magic behind what gave these islands their flight was in the music.

It makes me wonder if ever song in every tavern, at every festival and gathering is weaving its own spell.  When I sent my songa of Quartes and the others was it not the story but the melody that mattered?  Was I singing to Illithiust in a hope of breaking the spell that is the Cycles?

Fey have gathered to me when I played.  I just figured everything like a song but I wonder now if there was something about music that resonated with them, just as it resonated with the illithimar.  Is it perhaps why the Landian himself stayed with me?  Did song resonates with him and his great secret?  Giving all my blessings, all my luck, has it been result of spells I have crafted without realizing?

I don’t think I’ll ever truly find out, would need Quartes’ lifetimes to even hope, but even if I don’t know for sure there’s no reason to not try.  Song or story, there’s something yet I can do to try and protect my family.  To still try and help him.

Archivist’s Disposition: Journal is a copy of an old matron in a village in the Provinces.  Woman went by the name of Kyo.  No record exists of such an individual travelling with the now disappeared Last Landian, nor of the island of Aus Ladon.  Story has been deemed the result of a mind failing with age.  Distribution beyond the walls of the College is not advised due to risk of creating uncontrolled stories.
