There's Power in Stories

Check-In – Slowed by a Cold

Last week was a bit of a challenge.  We had company leader up to the new year, and while it was a great time somewhere along the way with all the extra going out and late nights I found myself with a cold.  I powered through the week via medication and a dose of stubbornness and have been feeling pretty good.  However, each day when I got home about all I could muster was a nap, watching some tv, taking a shower, and reading a book until the NyQuil kicked in and I fell asleep.  Exhaustion and my brain feeling like it was full of cotton meant not much writing got done until Friday night.

So, this past week’s story was from my backlog.  I had originally decided to hold onto it because I wanted to save it until after I had done a more formal introduction of Brokel.  I still plan on doing that but he’s been mentioned a few times now and I do think the story does a good job of portraying the Rider’s unique viewpoint and approach to the world.  As a Rider of the ever shifting Finnupave, Brokel has a unique take on Illithiust and I look forward to exploring that more over this year.

While it wasn’t a productive week for writing stories, I did have some good luck in farming some ideas for future stories and some articles.  That prep work should make it easier to hammer through stories this week, with my plan being to start with one of my Fey hunting stories.  On the article side, I’m not entirely sure where those will fit in when it comes to posting.  A good chunk of the media I took in while sick dealt with storytelling in video games, and I’ve quite a bit of spent time refining my thoughts on how the game play side of a video game generates unique ways of a telling a story.  I don’t think making a video game is something in my future, but I really do find it fascinating how the medium offers up different tools for telling stories and I look forward to sharing those thoughts with you in the future.

Beyond that, with any luck I’ll wake up tomorrow with this cold fully kicked.  As I mentioned in the last check-in, I’m hoping to work more on my novel this year and that starts with finalizing it’s outline.  I’ve set myself a deadline of the end of February to do that.  Once done, if I can muster the time to write half of the story this year that would be quite the win.  My DnD campaign has had three sessions and is starting to ramp up, though I haven’t really settled on how and if I’m gonna share that here.  I guess I’ll work on that, but would appreciate any thoughts you have.

Go forth and do good things,

Sean
