Funnily enough, as I was writing this check-in post I realized that I had uploaded the Elhandriel story to the website but had not published it. Which is a bit of a bummer as I had posted a story every weekend since I started Fey & Bard but in reality isn’t a huge deal. However, if you were waiting around over the weekend for your story I’m sorry that it was delayed.
With that said, Elhandriel has shown up in a few stories on Fey & Bard. The hints that I’ve laid mark her as one of the more important people in Quartes’ life during the time of his first fight against the Cycles of Dragons. This story came about from wondering what the other surviving Landians would’ve been up to as they waited for one of their kin to turn up as the Heir of Lehn. Elhandriel, having already been established and likely having the closest relation with Quartes amongst any of his kin, seemed the natural choice. Another part I look forward to exploring is how the Landians will react to Quartes himself when he’s revealed as the Heir of Lehn. We are well into the past from most of the Fey & Bard stories and so seeing Quartes before life has worn him down is also something I’m intrigued to explore.
I say all that but should mention I’m not intending to write a series of Elhandriel stories one after another (or nearly one after another) like recently did for “Against the Riders” and have done for my other multi-part stories. Rather, you can expect those stories to be peppered in with everything else I write here. They’ll each start with “Elhandriel” in the title.
Beyond that, another aspect I’m looking forward to exploring with Elhandriel is the archtype of the craft-knight. I like the idea of a character who crafts the gear they take into combat. We got to see a hint of that with Elhandriel engraving and assembling the arrows before her battle with the kercs. While mastering both combat and crafting would be a stretch for a hunai, Landian’s memories and their long lives certainly makes it possible. As the last child of the Line of Falden and being raised in such dark times it only seems appropriate for Elhandriel to have both of those skills.
Looking ahead, while I know I’m not planning on posting another Elhandriel story this upcoming week I’m not really sure what story I’m looking to post. So, guess we’ll get to find that one out together.
Go forth and do good things,
Sean
