Fey are a strange thing to consider. Inspiring wonder and fear, being things that should not and yet somehow are. I have sat here trying to think over Fey many times and it’s more often than not left me with a headache. I can almost understand the landian’s bare bones simplicity, it’s enough to give him a definition and then not have to think about them. A useful thing for a people who aren’t prone to making stories or jumping conclusions. However, we less sure-minded people need something to work off of.
Fey are an unreal belief given form. Someone says they saw a weird creature in the woods and it ran off with their lunch and enough people believe him, not a hard thing for how often a bird or a squirrel may run off with a morsel, and you get some mischievous critter that likes to sneak up on people and steal their food. The Last Landian told me that belief taps into the Feywild. What’s the Feywild? Why, according to said landian it’s the place where Fey come from.
Gotta love their circular logic, it closes their thought loop and yet tells you almost nothing.
Now, my opinion is the Feywild is somehow linked to life itself. Life finds its own ways through even without a focusing belief. It’s why new plants sprout in open fields, why mushrooms bloom from fallen logs, why a once empty pawn may not how little fish. Now, it works best when it has something to build on, a frame to settle around. That structure is often the stories that people tell. In a way, landians seem to me to be the counter to the Feywild. Assuming they were all like Quartes, their memories and their stubbornness would’ve seem to have kept the rampant chaos of the Feywilds in check.
Well, them and the illithimar, the very bones of Illithiust.
Now, landians being what they are they liked to categorize everything around them. So, Fey are any belief given shape by the Feywild. Find a Fey that’s helpful, and that’s a faerie. Find a Fey that’s troublesome, that’s an imp. Find a fey that’s deadly, but still acting within its original story, and that’s a demon.
If it looks like something that should’ve always moved around that’s…well apparently the landians considered that a normal state and just called them Fey. Belief giving life to something that shouldn’t be moving around and you get a golem. Side note: the Last Landian seems to have an affinity for rock golems…maybe it’s sharing in their often stony demeanor.
There is one more category according to Quartes. I asked him once what would happen if someone had made the belief that in some field over yonder there’re goats. He’d responded that if it were strong enough then there would be goats, goats born out of the Feywild. I asked him what he would call that and he of course responded with “Goat” but also that such a creature is called a Feyborn. I asked him how you could tell the difference between a Feyborn goat and a regular goat. He answered that he wasn’t sure that you could, the Fey were goats now.
I found that a sobering thought.
Yet it’s also something I find reassuring. If you really need to find something and you can strike the right belief to attract Fey out of the Feywild, and assuming the landian isn’t around to spoil it with his certainty, you might just always be able to find what you need.
